330(ish) London stations... #14 - 15

I'm fairly determined to get a few more London stations photographed this year. On my first weekend back in London after Christmas I managed to get a couple done.

Station #14 - Leyton Midland Road

First up I went to Leyton to do some shopping at an Asian supermarket there. This required a trip on the London Overground which has been mentioned in several previous posts, I travelled from Harringay Green Lanes to Leyton Midland Road.

Station #15 - Alexandra Palace

Later the same day I went out on my bike for a ride up to nearby Alexandra Palace. The station named for the Palace is actually on the edge of the park grounds in which the Palace is set. The Palace was previously served by two different stations however both are now closed. The current station is served by the First Capital Connect services previously mentioned, with the station in between Hornsey and New Southgate stations.

330(ish) London stations... #10 - 13

So I've been incredibly slack with this blog lately, I have been travelling by train (a lot) and have (occasionally) been taking photos, but evidently it has been the actual writing and uploading that I've not been bothering with. Updating this more regularly is on my list of things to do in the New Year, so here's to that.

Anyway I have got a few more London stations done over the last few months.

Station #10 - Clapham Junction

Early in Sepember I headed to Aldershot to watch Hereford United play away at Aldershot Town. My journey began at Clapham Junction, where I boarded a train on one of the station's 17 platforms. Clapham Junction is a hectic place, with over 2,000 trains passing through the station daily, making it the UK's busiest in terms of rail traffic. The platforms are linked by a dim, claustrophobic underpass, and indeed the station was recently named as one of England's 10 worst stations and is set to receive a share of £50 million for improvement work.

Station #11 - Tottenham Hale

A station has existed on this site since the mid-19th Century, however the current station was given a total revamp in the 1990s and none of the original station now remains. The mainline station is served by two services, the Stansted Express which links London Liverpool Street and Stansted Airport, as well as the West Anglia Main Line. The station is also served by the Victoria Line of the London Underground. Pictured is a 13.25 service to Hertford East.

Station #12 - Hornsey

Hornsey station is again with a few minutes walk of my house. The station is served by First Capital Connect suburban services that run from Moorgate and King's Cross in London to Welwyn Garden City and North Hertford stations in Hertfordshire. The tracks pictured also carry many other Northbound trains from Euston and King's Cross and as a result are pretty busy. Hornsey depot is also right next to the station.

Station #13 - New Southgate

New Southgate is another station on the above route, two stops North of Hornsey (with Alexandra Palace in between)

330(ish) London stations... #6 - 9

I've been a bit slack with this, but a few weeks ago I managed to photograph a couple more London train stations as I travelled around town.

Station #6 - Drayton Park

Drayon Park station is in Islington. In the background of the shot you can see the Emirates Stadium, the home of Arsenal FC. You can also just see a Northbound train, the station is served by trains from Moorgate to Hertford and Welwyn Garden City

Station #7 - Essex Road

Essex Road is another station is Islington, served by the Northern City Line which runs from Moorgate to Finsbury Park, on weekdays only. The line was formerly part of the London Underground network. The train lines run underground and the station had barriers in operation, so I had to make do with a photo from outside.

Station #8 - Old Street

Old Street is also served by the Northern City Line, and is also a station on the London Underground served by the Northern Line. Again, lines run underground.

Station #9 - Harringay Green Lanes

Harringay Green Lanes is another station on the Gospel Oak to Barking line. It is near to my house and the train I catch to Upper Holloway station for work. The station previously served Harringay Arena and Harringay Stadium, however both have now gone, closing in the 1950s and 1980s respectively, and the station has reduced in size accordingly.

330(ish) London stations... #3 - 5

Yesterday I went to pick up a bike that I had just bought from a guy in Hampstead which gave me the opportunity to collect another couple of stations!

Station #3 - Upper Holloway

Upper Holloway is a station on the Gospel Oak to Barking line, which became part of the Transport for London (TFL) network in November 2007. It's situated on Holloway Road and is only a few minutes walk from where I work, and therefore is probably the London station that I have used more times than any other. The picture shows a disused footbridge in the foreground and Holloway Road just behind it

Station #4 - Gospel Oak

To get to Hampstead I had to change trains at Gospel Oak for the North London line, which is also now part of the TFL network.

Station #5 - Hampstead Heath

I alighted at Hampstead Heath station about 60 seconds after leaving Gospel Oak. This was the first time I'd been to the station, I didn't really spot much of interest, although the station is sat in a very salubrious part of town.

330(ish) London stations... #1 & 2

So I decided that I needed something more to add to the blog, and after giving more thought to Broad Street station as mentioned in my previous post, I thought it'd be interesting to document a few London stations.

A quick Google search led me to this list on Wikipedia which contains around 330 stations in the London area. Obviously what constitutes London is debatable, but as this is the only list I can find, it seems fair to use it. A quick scan of the list revealed that I have already visited about 35 or so of the stations, and I've obviously passed through many more, however as I wasn't taking pictures I'll be starting at square one.

My aim therefore, is to visit and photograph as many London stations as I can (at least until I get bored). I'll upload one picture of each station I visit to the blog (any more than one would be a bit of an overkill I feel). None of the pictures will be taken from inside a train (that's too easy). I'll maybe write a few words about each station as I go, depending on whether I have anything of interest to say. So here we go...

Station #1 - London Waterloo

In the summer I play cricket for my work team, our home ground is in Chiswick which means I have to take the train from Waterloo out to Barnes Bridge, as I did yesterday. I'm usually in a rush when I pass through and as it's rush hour, it's pretty hectic. One of the most interesting parts of the station for me are the 5 disused platforms (20-24) that used to make up the Eurostar terminal. Since the service was moved to St. Pancras in 2007 the platforms have stood unused and it already looks in a pretty sorry state of affairs.

Station #2 - Vauxhall

On my return this week I got off the Southwest train service at Vauxhall station to change for the Underground, the picture above shows another Southwest service on the opposite platform.
